Lumentum Showcases 400G Transceiver Portfolio For Next-Generation Data Centers

03/13/2018

Live Demonstrations Of Both QSFP-DD FR4 And OSFP FR4 Modules

MILPITAS, Calif., and SAN DIEGO, March 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Lumentum Holdings Inc. ("Lumentum") will showcase its high-speed transceiver platform with a live product demonstration of both 400G QSFP-DD FR4 and OSFP FR4 optical modules at OFC 2018  from March 13 – 15, 2018, in San Diego, Calif., at the San Diego Convention Center in Lumentum's booth # 3123. The demonstration and ongoing module development, parallels the growing market traction of 400G solutions for network interconnections in datacenter, cloud, and other telecom applications.

"By demonstrating QSFP-DD and OSFP transceivers, we are showcasing our support for standards under both Multi-Source Agreements (MSAs)," said Chris Pfistner, vice president, product line management, Datacom. "In offering these solutions, Lumentum confirms its continuing focus on datacenter and cloud networking requirements."

As global data transmission demands grow, driven by rapidly increasing machine-to-machine communications, datacenter interconnects must scale accordingly. Hyperscale datacenters will drive the transition from 100G interconnects to 400G with enterprise and telecom markets expected to leverage the economies of scale and follow suit.

"Global sales of optical transceivers are projected to grow at the datacenter level as processing speed and data volume requirements increase," said Vladimir Kozlov, Founder and CEO, LightCounting. "This is especially true as the datacenter industry prepares for the transition from 100G to 400G, where LightCounting forecasts that sales of 400GbE transceivers will reach $2 billion by 2022."

Live 400G Demonstrations

Lumentum will demonstrate traffic through a 2km optical fiber link, showcasing interoperability between QSFP-DD FR4 and OSFP FR4.

"This demonstration of dense, high capacity pluggables is an important step towards developing the 400G ecosystem," said Justin Abbott, senior product line manager, Lumentum. "These modules are based on Lumentum's industry-leading Externally Modulated Lasers (EML), which have been shown previously to deliver the performance and flexibility critical to early deployment and interoperability."

The value of such demonstrations is echoed by Bill Gartner, Vice President/GM Optical Systems & Optics Group, of Cisco. "Rapid growth of traffic is driving service providers, datacenter and cloud computing operators to transition to 400GbE interfaces for the next generation of switching, routing and transport equipment. Cisco expects QSFP-DD will become the de-facto standard for 400G just as other QSFP form factors have done so at 40G and 100G. Cisco considers the live 400G QSFP-DD transceiver demonstration an early indicator that optical module manufacturers are well positioned for the broad market adoption of the QSFP-DD MSA and ecosystem."

QSFP-DD FR4 and OSFP FR4 Overview

The Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Double Density (QSFP56-DD) is a pluggable module that supports four times the bandwidth of conventional QSFP28 modules. It has an additional row of contacts for an eight-lane electrical interface to support 400 Gb/s aggregate bandwidth. Systems designed to support QSFP-DD will be backwards compatible with existing QSFP form factors.

The Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable (OSFP) is a high-performance pluggable optics module form factor that supports the full range of 400G optics technologies for datacenter and metro applications. It implements 8 x 50 Gbps electrical data lanes.
