AI Scales on Light

AI infrastructure is scaling in every direction – up, out, and across. Each domain depends on moving data faster, more efficiently, more reliably, and at greater volume. That scaling increasingly runs on light.

Why Does Light Matter for AI?

AI performance increasingly depends on moving data efficiently between accelerators, memory, storage, and sites. As AI systems grow, these connections must support more bandwidth, lower latency, and greater energy efficiency over distances from inside a rack to across data centers.

The challenge is physics: as data rates and distances increase, electrical links become harder to extend due to signal loss, power, and thermal constraints. Optical connectivity can move more data over longer distances, with lower loss and energy per bit.

Lumentum enables these connections with advanced optical technologies spanning lasers, components, and optical switching, backed by decades of high-volume manufacturing experience.

SCALE-UP NETWORKS

Scale-up networks increase computing power within a single rack or adjacent racks by adding processors, accelerators, memory, and storage. In Al infrastructure, scale-up typically uses very high-speed, low latency connectivity so a cluster of many GPUs or other accelerators can operate as a single, tightly coordinated compute resource.

SCALE-OUT NETWORKS

Scale-Out

Scale-out networks increase compute capacity by connecting multiple clusters across a network, allowing workloads to be distributed among them. Scale-out is commonly used in cloud and Al data centers to expand performance and capacity by adding more compute nodes.

Scale-across networks connect multiple high-performance systems or Al clusters so they can work together across multiple data centers. Scale-across uses high-bandwidth optical links with optical amplification as needed, to move data efficiently between data centers located in the same metro area, nearby regions or across the country.
